THE KIDS WANNA ROCK… And rock they certainly did - for at least three solid hours, and close to four if you count Winter Moods’ excellent opening set! We’d been hearing about this concert for months on end, so it came as no surprise that the crowd – around the 18,000 mark, by the way – was more than ready and willing to get stuck in for a rockin’ good time on the night! From the opening acoustic strums of There Will Never Be Another Tonight on the smaller central stage, it was immediately clear that Bryan Adams was geared up to entertain the Maltese audience! The organisers did tell us he wanted to interact, and he pulled out all the stops in getting up close and personal with the audience. Not only did he repeatedly whip up the crowd into a frenzy with every anthemic tune in his vast repertoire, he also went further by inviting a young lady – the fortunate but off-key Claire from Zebbug – onstage to join him on his hit from the late 90s, When You’re Gone, which originally featured ex-Sporty Spice, Mel C on vocals. Many mobiles and lighters were swayed overhead, not to mention mass sing-alongs, when Adams played the mushy ballads (Everything I Do and Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman), but the real fun came with his electric rendition of rockers like Summer Of 69, It’s Only Love, Cuts Like A Knife, Run To You, 18 Till I Die, The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me and of course, Kids Wanna Rock! Clearly, he can dish out a soppy tune, but there’s no denying that it is when he rocks that this Canadian ‘kid’ is at his best! A good night and a great gig – possibly one of the best on the island so far! Michael Bugeja |
